What is Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD)?
Macular degeneration, usually age related, is defined as a progressive deterioration of the central retina, where you see 20/20, called the macula

Who gets ARMD?
Generally a person in their seventh decade or older in life.

Will I go blind from ARMD?
This condition affects the central vision area, the macula, and blindness does occur when this area detoriates to a best correctable vision of 20/200 in each eye. However peripheral vision is not affected thus allowing people with macular degeneration to be quite mobile.

How can I tell if I have ARMD?
It is somewhat difficult without consulting an eye care practitioner. There are several other conditions that can cause vision loss, cataracts, corneal dystrophy. Both are operable and when the condition is corrected vision is restored.

What causes ARMD?
This is a complex disorder involving genetics, cardiovascular, nutritional, and environmental components.

Will my vision be restored after being treated?
At present the answer is no in most cases. However research continues to progress and it is hopeful in the not to distant future a cure or at least a stabilization of the condition will be found.

Can ARMD be prevented?
Studies indicate that ARMD ca be prevented, baring genetic ARMD by eating a balanced diet with emphasis on dark leafy vegetables, be a non-smoker, moderate to total abstinence of alcohol and exercise regularly.
